Overview
In Windows you can uninstall programs by selecting Start ->
Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs. Windows
keeps information about the programs that can be uninstalled from
your computer in an uninstall list in the registry.
As any program or anybody with a registry editor has access to
this uninstall list, the list may become corrupted or even
destroyed. In this case you will no longer be able to uninstall
programs from your computer!
This program keeps copies of this list (backups) and helps you
restore the list when necessary. This way you can rest assured
that you will always be able to uninstall unnecessary or unwanted
programs from your computer.
Step-by-Step Guide
Open UninstallAbility from the Start Menu, UninstallAbility
folder. Click Next on the opening page. UninstallAbility
will show you the following three options:
I would like to create a backup of my uninstall list
Select this option and click Next to create a backup of
the uninstall list of your computer. UninstallAbility will show
you the programs currently available in this list (the programs
that can be uninstalled from your computer). Click Backup
to create the backup copy. UninstallAbility will tell you if the
backup was created successfully or not.
My uninstall list is gone!
Select this option and click Next to restore the
uninstall list of your computer from a backup.
Use this option when your uninstall list in Control Panel ->
Add/Remove Programs appears empty and you are no longer able to
uninstall any programs from your computer. Misbehaved cleanup
programs or uninstallers or anybody with a registry editor may
corrupt or destroy your uninstall list.
UninstallAbility will ask you which backup you want to restore.
For each backup you will see the date and time of its creation
and the programs available in the backup. Click Next to
restore the selected backup. A confirmation page will be
displayed. Click Restore to proceed. Answer
"Yes" when asked about adding information to the
registry. UninstallAbility will tell you if the information from
the backup was successfully added to the registry or not.
Some programs disappeared from my uninstall list!
Select this option and click Next to restore one or more
programs to the uninstall list of your computer from a backup.
Use this option when you are unable to uninstall one or more
programs because they are no longer available in the uninstall
list in Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs, but you still
find them on your computer. Sometimes misbehaved cleanup programs
or uninstallers remove programs from the uninstall list, but
leave them on your computer, without an option to remove them.
UninstallAbility will display all programs that are available in
the backups. Select the program(s) you want to restore to the
uninstall list and click Next. A confirmation page will
be displayed. Click Restore to proceed. Answer
"Yes" when asked about adding information to the
registry. UninstallAbility will tell you if the information from
the backup was successfully added to the registry or not.
Creating automatic backups with
UninstallAbility
By default, UninstallAbility creates a backup of the uninstall
list every day, the first time the computer is started that day.
To disable these automatic backups or to create them at larger
intervals, open the Options dialog box by clicking the Options
button (for more details see the section below).
Options
Use the Options button to display and change
UninstallAbility settings.
To set how often you want UninstallAbility to create automatic
backups, select an option in the Automatic backups when
computer starts tab. Automatic backups are created when your
computer starts. For example, if you select Daily backups,
UninstallAbility will create one backup every day, the first time
the computer is started that day.
To set whether to keep all backups or automatically delete older
backups and keep only the most recent ones, select an option in
the Backup settings tab.
To delete one or more backups, select them in the list from the Current
backups tab and click Delete selected backups.
